Isaac was born in Cardiff in 1923. From 1940 to 1944 he studied at Cardiff College of Art with Ceri Richards, who had already made his name as a leading modernista well-known painter and printmaker especially of landscapes. He studied at Cardiff College of Art. Early in his career he was influenced by the Neo-Romantic painters such as Graham Sutherland and Keith Vaughan.
He took up a number of teaching posts in the London area from the late 1950s becoming Head of Art at Borough Road College in Middlesex, and then at Battersea College of Education.
Isaac exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1957 and showed there through the late 1950s, the 1960s and finally in 1979. In the 1980s he returned to live in his wife’s home town of Abergavenny.
Bert Isaac’s work is held in a number of public collections including MOMA Wales, Brecknock Museum and Art Gallery and the collection of the University of South Wales. He died in Abergavenny.
