James Gorman was born in Gourock, Renfrewshire, Scotland. He studied mural painting at the Glasgow School of Art 1949-53 a notable teacher being Walter Pritchard for mural painting. His work ranges from landscapes to strong figurative works. He was subsequently commissioned to paint murals, including for Trinity College Glasgow. His national service included various art work and a mural currently resides in the War office. He was influenced by Edward Burra and Stanley Spencer. Gorman started exhibiting with the Glasgow Group. He was a member of the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts and exhibited in many venues
He lived latterly on the Isle of Arran.
