JOSEF HERMAN OBE RA (1911 – 2000)
In South Wales he built his reputation as an artist, with his paintings of Welsh miners. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy in 1990. His work is in many public collections including the Tate.
Josef Herman - Artist Bio
Born in Warsaw. Josef Herman’s refugee journey began with spells in Belgium and France before finally he came to the UK in 1940, and then to South Wales where he arrived in 1944. He lived and worked in Wales until 1955.
In South Wales Herman built his reputation as an artist, with his paintings of Welsh miners. In the early 1960s his subject matter changed to dancers and rehearsals of the Kirov ballet. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy in 1990. His work is in many public collections including the Tate.
